Jim started listening to music from a very early age. He bought his own
music and devices on which to play that music, if it was not broadcast
through the airwaves. He has played trombone, he has played guitar, he
has played some drums but didn't go far. He was a top 40 kinda guy most
of his life until he got bit by the Blue Grass bug while attending
graduate school and found himself living with some Blue Grass musicians.
This consumed his musical time for a couple of years and then work and
family took the lions share of his time. He found that kids were more
fun than music but the kids grew up and got to the point where they
could be more independent. Then along came Ken Burns and his PBS Jazz
Special. In less than three months Jim found himself being pulled into
the jazz musical genre. [interestingly enough, Jim learned that Blue
Grass and Jazz had some definite similarities] Since that time in 2001
Jim has grown more and more Jazz oriented getting pulled in deeper and
deeper. He has written about Jazz. He is on the Board of Directors for
Jazz Advocate, a non-profit organization promoting jazz in the Dayton
and surrounding areas and he attends live jazz performances every chance
he gets. You will find him most Sunday nights at Jazz Central out on
East Third when he catches the Sunday Night Jazz Jam. As he says on his
show:
Jazz can inspire
permeate throughout
it can validate feelings
give your mind a workout
but from now till the next time
to you I implore
there's jazz music out there
